ALN Reform Letter

Dear Parents and Carers,

ALN Reform

All schools in Wales are currently in the process of Additional Learning Needs Reform.  This reform is being phased in over the next two years.  Only half of our classes will be affected this year.

Nursery, Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 are moving to the new system.

Reception, Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6 will remain on the current system and there will be no changes.

How will this affect my child?

The main change is with the ALN register not the support your child receives.

Schools have to decide if pupils can be supported with Inclusive Learning Provision.  That means they can be supported with the interventions that we run as part of our normal “menu” of support, such as Numicon and Phonic Rocket.

If this is the case for your child, they will continue to have the support they need but will no longer be on the ALN register.   They will no longer have an IEP (Individual Education Plan).  However, they will continue to have the same support and be monitored on our Inclusive Learning Provision register.

Any pupils who remain on the ALN register will now have an Individual Development Plan which is like a more detailed IEP.

If your child has ALN and is in Nursery, Year 1, Year 3 or Year 5, you will receive a letter to explain whether your child is remaining on the ALN register or being supported through Inclusive Learning Provision.  You will have the opportunity to discuss this with the class teacher.

If your child has ALN and is in Reception, Year 2, Year 4 or Year 6, there will be no changes.  You will receive their IEP (Individual Education Plan) to check and sign, and you can arrange to talk to the class teacher if you wish to discuss it.

You will be fully involved in any changes that are made as part of ALN reform.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Quin
